Max Weber argued that sociology should employ Verstehen to understand subjective meanings behind social action.
Example: Voting behaviour influenced by ideology, identity, and emotions.
3. Impossibility of Controlled Experiments
Human societies cannot usually be studied under laboratory conditions.
Example: Researchers cannot experimentally manipulate caste or religion.
4. Dynamic and Context-Specific Nature of Society
Social reality changes across cultures and historical periods, limiting universal laws.
Example: Family structures vary across societies and over time.
5. Ethical Constraints
Social research involves human participants, requiring informed consent and protection of rights.
Example: Researchers cannot deliberately expose communities to harmful conditions for experimentation.
Conclusion
The methods of natural sciences have significantly contributed to making sociology more systematic, objective, and evidence-based. However, since society consists of thinking, meaning-making individuals, natural science methods alone are insufficient. Sociology therefore requires a balanced approach that combines scientific rigor with interpretive understanding, making methodological pluralism the most appropriate approach for studying social reality.
