Q. How is Sociology related to Common Sense? (UPSC CSE Sociology Optional, 2021 | 10 Marks)
Introduction
Common sense consists of everyday beliefs and practical knowledge gained through personal experience, whereas sociology is the scientific study of society. Sociology is related to common sense because both deal with social life, but sociology goes beyond common sense through systematic and objective analysis.
I. Relationship between Sociology and Common Sense
1. Both Study Everyday Social Life
Both sociology and common sense seek to understand human behaviour, family, religion, education, and social interactions.
Example: Both explain changes in family relationships.
2. Common Sense Provides Initial Observations
Many sociological questions originate from everyday experiences and observations.
Example: Rising divorce rates becoming a topic of sociological research.
3. Sociology Critically Examines Common Sense
Sociology tests popular beliefs through scientific methods instead of accepting them blindly.
Example: Poverty is explained through social inequality, not merely individual laziness.
4. Sociology Uses Scientific Methods
Unlike common sense, sociology relies on empirical research, surveys, observation, and theory.
Example: Émile Durkheim explained suicide using statistical evidence.
5. Sociology is Objective and Value-Neutral
It seeks unbiased explanations by separating facts from personal opinions and cultural beliefs.
Example: Sociological studies of gender inequality use data rather than stereotypes.
Conclusion
Sociology is closely related to common sense because both focus on everyday social life. However, sociology transforms everyday observations into scientific knowledge through empirical research, theoretical analysis, and objectivity.
